After the game, I was still reeling from Coach Reno calling me out for flirting with Allie. As I made my way out of the locker room, I was worried about how Iâd handle the fallout. I mean, crap, my actual girlfriend hadnât even been fifteen yards away. No way Kayla had missed what Coach had said.
It had taken all my willpower not to look in Kaylaâs direction. Weâd been winning, but only by a narrow margin. I couldnât afford to lose focus because I had been flirting with Allie. And Kayla was going to be smoking mad about it.
Scanning the parking lot, I spotted her leaning against the tailgate of my truck, arms folded, leg bouncing as her foot tapped against the asphalt. As much as I did not want to deal with her, I accepted my fate and headed toward my truck anyway.
âGood game tonight, man,â JJ called from behind me.
I stopped to wait for him to catch up. âYou, too, man.â
âI canât believe coach called you out like that, dude. He knows you and Allie are buds.â JJ shot me a sympathetic look. He knew exactly what Coachâs razzing would cost me with my girlfriend.
âIâm totally in for it, man.â I tipped my head toward my truck, widening my eyes. JJ glanced over and winced.
âDude, just make sure sheâs all right.â JJ gestured behind me. âYou arenât the only one who cares about her.â
Confused, I glanced over my shoulder. My heart sunk to my stomach. Allie. My best friend, the one person I loved more than anyone, sat hunched on the curb in front of the school. What was she doing there?
âLater, man,â I called to JJ as I course corrected toward Allie.
âAllie, what are you doing? Whereâs your mom?â I dropped my bag at her hip and crouched in front of her.
âI forgot she had a girlâs night out with some of the daycare moms tonight.â She avoided my gaze. âDonât worry, Connor. I was just getting ready to call her. She said sheâd be home around now.â
âWhy didnât you tell me you needed a ride?â Allie knew the rules. I would drop whatever I was doing to make sure she got home.
âI didnât, umââ Her eyes darted toward the parking lot.
Right. Kayla. Allie didnât want to get me in any more trouble. I sighed, raking my hands through my hair. Kayla might be my girlfriend, but Allie came first, even if it made me a jerk of a boyfriend.
âDonât worry about her. Come on. Iâll take you home.â I grabbed her hand and pulled her up.
âNo, Connor, itâs okay. I canââ
âAre you serious right now?â The sound of Kaylaâs angry voice drew us both up short. Allie tried to pull away. Instead of letting her go, I threaded my fingers through hers, enjoying every second of her hand in mine.
Kayla stormed right up to Allie. âYou little bitââ
âHey!â I stepped in front of Allie, my chest absorbing the jab Kayla intended for her. âStop! Kayla!â
âYou lied! All this time, you lied.
